Using this site
AquaReefBasin is published for general information about freshwater aquarium water chemistry, filtration and maintenance. You are welcome to read it, print it, and use what you learn on your own tank. Republishing the text elsewhere, in whole or in substantial part, is not permitted without written permission.
Accuracy, and its limits
Published figures on the parameter and fix pages cite their sources and are checked against them. Even so, aquariums are individual: your tap water, stocking, temperature, plants and equipment all change what a given reading means. Nothing here is a substitute for observing your own tank, testing it, and keeping a record. Where a correct value depends on the species you keep, this site says so rather than printing a figure that would suit nobody.
Animal health
This site does not provide veterinary advice. It does not diagnose fish disease, does not recommend treatments, and publishes no medication dosages anywhere, for any purpose. Where a symptom in an animal is mentioned, it is mentioned only as a reason to test the water immediately and then to contact an aquatic veterinarian. If you are looking at an unwell animal, please do exactly that. A product listed on this site is not a treatment and must not be used as one.
Dosing
Every dose for every product — conditioners included — comes from the manufacturer’s label for the volume you are treating. Concentrations differ enormously between products that look similar, and this site deliberately publishes no dosing figures for anything.
Electrical safety
Aquariums combine water with mains-powered equipment. Where this site describes maintenance, it says to unplug heaters, filters and pumps at the outlet before your hands go in the water, and to leave a heater unplugged until its glass is fully submerged again. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your own equipment, and consult a qualified electrician about anything to do with your household wiring.
