My pH reads differently every time I test it
A moving pH is a KH story nine times out of ten: the water has run out of the carbonate buffer that holds it steady. Test KH in the same session as pH, because a pH number on its own cannot be interpreted. Some of what looks like a swing is also the normal day-night rhythm of a planted tank, which is why testing at the same hour matters.

Before anything goes into the tank and before anything comes out of it, get these numbers. They cost fifteen minutes and they decide everything that follows.
- pH and KH — acidity of the water, plus the carbonate buffer that resists changing it
- Ammonia — total ammonia — the ammonium ion plus free ammonia, added together

What to doRebuild buffer through regular water changes with water that carries some KH, and check what your tap actually provides. Carbonate hardscape — crushed coral, limestone, shell — raises it slowly and steadily if your tap cannot.

How to confirmTest at dawn and again in the evening on the same day. In a planted tank the evening reading is routinely higher, and that difference is the plants, not a problem.

What to doUse the high-range bottle whenever the normal test reads at or near its maximum. Above the ceiling the color stops responding, which looks like impressive stability and is not.
Time to resolve: Immediate — this is a measurement error, not a water problem
Driftwood, peat or botanicals steadily acidifying the water
How to confirmThe tank is tinted, KH is low, and pH has been falling for a month or more. Removing a piece of wood to a bucket for a week and testing changes the trend.
What to doDecide which water you want. Either accept a soft, low-pH tank and keep species suited to it, or reduce the material and rebuild KH. What you cannot do is keep both and expect the number to hold still.
Time to resolve: Three to six weeks for either direction to settle
What not to do
These are the moves that make this particular problem worse, and they are all common. Most of them come from wanting to do something substantial when the right answer is something small.
- Do not correct pH before you have a KH reading. You will be moving a number that has nothing holding it.
- Do not chase a published ideal value. Stability at a slightly wrong number is easier on fish than an accurate number that visits elsewhere every week.
- Do not compare a morning reading to an evening reading and call it a swing.
- Do not add carbonate hardscape in quantity all at once. Slow is the whole point here.
When this stops being a water question
Rapid pH movement is genuinely hard on fish and can show as darting, hiding, or hanging near the surface. Stabilize the water first — that is what this page is for. If an animal is still unwell after the readings are steady, the next step is an aquatic veterinarian rather than any product.
Keeping it from coming back
The habit that prevents this is testing pH and KH together, always, at the same time of day, and writing both down. A KH that is trending down over a month gives you a month of warning before the pH does anything visible, and rebuilding buffer with ordinary water changes at that point is uneventful. Almost every dramatic pH story is a KH reading nobody was taking.
