The temperature is different every time I look at it
Take two readings, one early morning and one late evening, from a thermometer that sits in the water. The gap between them is the number that matters, and anything beyond about two degrees is worth fixing. Most swings come from sunlight, a room that cools overnight, or a heater that is undersized for the volume.

Before anything goes into the tank and before anything comes out of it, get these numbers. They cost fifteen minutes and they decide everything that follows.
- Temperature — the temperature of the water itself — not of the room the tank sits in
- Ammonia — total ammonia — the ammonium ion plus free ammonia, added together

What to doClose a curtain, move the tank, or fit a blind. This removes the largest single input and usually solves the swing on its own — and it helps the algae situation at the same time.

Heater undersized or failing to keep up

What to doMatch the heater to the actual volume rather than to the tank label. Unplug it before any water change and leave it unplugged until the glass is fully submerged, because a hot heater in air can crack.

Large cold water changes
How to confirmThe reading drops sharply on water change day and takes most of a day to recover. Replacement water is going in noticeably colder than the tank.
What to doMatch the replacement water temperature by hand before it goes in, and change a smaller percentage more often rather than a large volume occasionally.
Time to resolve: From the next water change onward
What not to do
These are the moves that make this particular problem worse, and they are all common. Most of them come from wanting to do something substantial when the right answer is something small.
- Do not adjust the heater dial every day. Chasing a reading produces exactly the oscillation you are trying to remove.
- Do not put a heater in a tank and take a reading from the room instead. A room thermometer or hygrometer reports the air; it cannot tell you the water temperature.
- Do not do a water change with the heater still plugged in.
- Do not correct a temperature quickly. A degree or two a day is uneventful; five in an afternoon is not.
When this stops being a water question
Swinging temperature is a real stressor and fish may hide, stop eating, or sit near the bottom while it is happening. Steady the water first. An animal that stays off its food or shows physical signs after the temperature is stable needs an aquatic veterinarian — that is outside what water chemistry can answer.
Keeping it from coming back
Two habits cover almost everything here. Take a reading at both ends of the day for one week and write both down, so you know what the tank actually does rather than what it does at the moment you happen to look. Then remove the largest input you find — usually the sun. After that, match replacement water by hand, unplug the heater before every change, and leave the dial alone once it is right.
