Read this first

Common questions

Can I use one of these instead of an aquarium thermometer?

No. They measure the temperature of the air around them. Water temperature has to be measured in the water, with a thermometer made for it, and the two readings are routinely several degrees apart.

Then why would I want one at all?

Because the room is the load your heater is fighting. If the room falls five degrees overnight and your tank falls with it, the room monitor is what showed you the pattern. The humidity reading also explains evaporation rate, which is why some tanks need topping up weekly and others monthly.

Does the humidity reading tell me anything about the tank?

Indirectly. Dry air pulls water out of an open-topped tank faster, and evaporation removes water while leaving everything dissolved in it behind. If your level drops quickly, low room humidity is often the reason.

Do I need one that connects to an app?

Only if you want history or remote alerts. If you are simply curious what the room does at night, any logging unit answers that. The connected models are for watching a room you are not standing in.
